Cumberland Council is inviting the community to participate in a consultation aimed at reviewing the current taxi zones across the Cumberland area.
Since the establishment of Cumberland Council, the taxi licensing zones from the former Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council, and Copeland Borough Council have remained in place. This has resulted in a system where each zone licences its own taxis and drivers, leading to differing rules, tariffs, and limited operational areas.
The Current Challenge The current system requires drivers and vehicles operating across the whole of Cumberland to obtain two separate licences in each of the three zones. This can create unnecessary barriers for drivers and limit their ability to serve customers across the entire area.
The Proposal
Cumberland Council is exploring the possibility of creating a single taxi licensing zone. If a single taxi licensing zone was created, only two licences would be required for the whole of Cumberland – one hackney carriage vehicle licence and a hackney carriage driver’s licence.
Your Voice Matters The Regulatory Committee of Cumberland Council is conducting this consultation to gather feedback on whether to maintain the three existing taxi licensing zones or transition to a single zone for the entire area. This inclusive process seeks input from all stakeholders, including residents, taxi operators, drivers, businesses, and users connected to the taxi trade.
Consultation Details The consultation will be open from Friday 28 February 2025 to Thursday 22 May 2025. After the consultation period ends, all responses will be compiled and presented to the Regulatory Committee for consideration.
