Help Shape Temporary Taxi Rank and Rail Replacement Arrangements at Carlisle Station

Cumberland Council is delivering the £40.5 million Carlisle Station Gateway project in partnership with Network Rail and Avanti West Coast.

As part of the construction works, we are seeking feedback on temporary arrangements for taxi ranks and rail replacement services at Carlisle Station.

What is proposed?

  • The taxi rank at Court Square Brow would remain in its current location.
  • During periods when rail replacement buses are needed (for planned engineering works or emergency rail disruption), part of the taxi rank would be temporarily used as a bus loading area.
  • Space would remain available for up to three taxis at Court Square Brow during these periods.
  • Additional taxis would be asked to use nearby alternative locations until rail replacement services have finished.
  • Once the rail replacement operation ends, the taxi rank would return to normal use.

Looking ahead

A new transport and public space layout is being created at George Square, at the rear of the station.

Once these works are complete, rail replacement services will operate permanently from George Square and the taxi rank at Court Square Brow will return to its normal operation at all times.

Have Your Say

This survey is open to taxi drivers, station users and anyone who may be affected by these temporary arrangements.

Please note that this consultation relates only to the temporary arrangements required during construction works. It is not seeking views on the wider Carlisle

Station Gateway project or the permanent taxi rank arrangements, which have already been approved through separate processes.

Your feedback will help shape the proposals before a formal statutory consultation takes place under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.
